The University of Michigan released its final June reading on Friday, June 26… 49.5. The second-lowest mark in the survey’s 74-year history, beaten only by last month’s all-time record of 44.8. When Lehman collapsed in 2008, this index bottomed at 55.3. When COVID shut the country down, it never fell below 71.8. You’re living through a moment that feels worse to everyday Americans than either of those crises. And the part that should really bother you… the S&P 500 is up 8% this year.
During the worst month of COVID lockdowns, with 20 million jobs gone overnight, Americans rated their economic confidence at 71.8 — today, with restaurants full and the market up 8%, they rated it 49.5.
