China used to be America's biggest foreign creditor. In November 2013, Beijing held $1.317 trillion of our debt. Its holdings have been falling ever since… and as of July, they're down to $618 billion. Less than half. Lowest level since 2008. Some of that money may simply sit in accounts in other countries now, but the trend is hard to miss. Many analysts say Washington's freeze of Russia's reserves in 2022 gave central banks one more reason to rethink how much U.S. debt they hold. This week, the Treasury is auctioning $97 billion in notes while yields sit at 24-year highs. The buyer list keeps shrinking. The debt pile doesn't.
